As you come out of Corfu’s International Airport turn left until you come to a large junction and traffic lights. Stay on this main road as you head south until the next main junction. Turn left again towards Perama and Benitses. You are now on the main coastal road heading south.

The first time you will have sight of the sea on your left hand side will be in Perama. This is definitely worth a pit stop either to get a better view of Pontikonisi (Mouse Island), Corfu’s most famous land mark islet, or to walk down to the foot bridge that crosses the airport’s runway all the way to Kanoni.

If you are lucky you might catch an airplane landing definitely a once in a life time experience!

As you continue south you will reach the turning on your right for Achilleon Palace built in 1892 for the Empress Elisabeth of Austria which occupies a fine position amidst beautiful gardens overlooking the Ionian Sea. It is a particularly beautiful palace with many famous paintings, sculptures and other artefacts including the larger than life wounded Achilles in the garden grounds.

Drive back down to the coastal road and head south past the traditional fishing village of Benitses where the Beatles holidayed back in the 60’s, visit the Shell Museum or stop for a coffee boost or a good bite to eat.

Along the way you drive through the resort of Moraitika and Messonghi roundabout. Keep to the right as the road turns inland until you reach a T-junction where you shall turn left across a small bridge. At the BP petrol station turn right towards Ag. Matheos. This road takes you to Korission Lake and Chalikounas Beach where you can easily spend the rest of the afternoon enjoying the surf and sunshine.

In the area you will also come across the medieval Gardiki Castle and Prasoudi Beach which also has a humble sea side café and taverna to enjoy the magnificent sunset from.
